I got a chance to watch Tan France's MasterClass, and here are some awesome things I learned from it.
Queer Eye was one of the first shows I binge-watched on Netflix, and needless to say, I had a bias towards Tan France among the Fab 5 (jk, I love them all). I loved the ease with which he made personal style comfortable for everyone. Such remarkable taste comes with experience, and Tan France had it ample in the fashion industry. From being a stylist to being an entrepreneur, he has done it all and made french tuck an important styling quotient.
I grabbed his memoir, Naturally Tan, when it came out and enjoyed reading his personal anecdotes. So, I couldn't pass on the chance of learning more from him through MasterClass. In a series of videos, he gave some great tips to develop a personal style. Here's a tidbit from the same that was worth noting down:
His two main rules are: Know your proportions and know who you are.
To get the right fit: first, know the proportions of your body and then find clothes that work for them.
To know yourself, ask all the tough questions:
What do you like colorwise?
What's the one thing you won't try at all?
What's your comfort zone? How much are you willing to step out of it?
Who is your style icon, or who is the person whose style you admire?
How do you see yourself in the future?
Be true and clear about these, as the answers will help you uncover your style.
Always have a capsule wardrobe with these key items: a great piece of outerwear, a leather jacket, shirts, a great-fitting suit, knitwear, t-shirts, denim, white sneakers, neutral heels and flats, a statement belt, and a classic dress.
Take risks and try things on, be it prints or new textures. You never know what will actually work for you. It also changes things up in your wardrobe and makes dressing up fun.
Don't go all-in with a trend/style that's out of your comfort zone. Ease into it with small things and then build up.
Edit: your look, your wardrobe, and your style to get to what feels really you.
Know that you don't have to wear all the trends. If a certain trend doesn't work for you, it's best to ignore it.
Finally, embrace YOUR style. Wear what feels right for YOU.
Aren't these some really amazing tips? So, are you ready to embrace your style? Let me know in the comments below if these pointers were helpful.
Love,
Rashmi B.
