#HauteCoutureOnline in live, and now everyone can get the first glimpse of the couture collections.
I first took note of #HauteCoutureOnline when I saw the creative presentation by one of my favorite Indian designers, Rahul Mishra. More on his collection later, but first, I need to acknowledge this brilliant initiative by Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode. The fashion industry is experiencing major changes in its operations this year due to the pandemic, and going digital is one of the mediums through which we can still experience the sartorial magic. Though we might need to get used to it, it's an interesting experiment indeed.
The grand shows encompassed the whole visual surrealness that the couture lines have to offer. Video representation took it up a notch. It wasn't like the designers didn't do this earlier. There were brand films made even before, but this time everyone gets to be a part of it. Also, the pandemic had halted the production process. So as the industry gets back on its feet, some of the videos depict the ideas that the designers and brands have to offer for this couture season and not the collection in its entirety. #HauteCoutureOnline kickstarted with the supermodel, Naomi Campbell, and had a strong message on the forefront.
Below is the link where you can watch all the videos collated by Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode in association with YouTube.
Also, see #HauteCoutureOnline calendar for reference, which also has the individual show links.
Rahul Mishra's creations are always an immersive experience as you go on a journey with him. The film, Butterfly People, was just that. An ode to karigars, the video focuses on craftsmanship and the idea of adaptation of the new normal. His take of masks is also so mesmerizing.
Dior's presentation though ethereal got criticized for not showcasing diversity, which has been a key movement worldwide. Their film did manage to capture the earlier essence of couture through miniature fashion mannequins. Creative Director of Schiaparelli, Daniel Roseberry, is known for his sketches and showcases the new collection through them. The film shows how the collection came into being in just one day on a park bench in Washington Square Park. Iris van Herpen obviously weaved magic through just one garment presentation that leaves a lasting impression. Ralph & Russo took a step in the future by introducing their digital avatar and muse, Hauli, which to me, is incredible. There are so many other videos like these to check out, and I am glad we have all access to them!
It's clear that there's a shift in the way the fashion industry will function in the future, and this is just the beginning.
Love,
Rashmi B.
