The art of layering can be complicated at times, but it is fun every time!
Given that I am from a city where the only constant is its humidity, layering was not my best friend. The more I had to add to a basic outfit, the more I regretted it unless I was in an air-conditioned room. So, jackets were never my regular style. I found them to be more of a hassle than them being utilitarian. They looked good on any outfits I wore for events, so that's where I wore them most. I had no appreciation for them whatsoever while donning them.
Things changed for me when I shifted my base to a place with cooler weather. When I had to put on a jacket even to go for a grocery run, I sort of got irritated by it. I realized then that I really don't like to wear outerwear. They were now useful alright because of the cold weather, but still, I thought of them as a nuisance. So, how did I finally rectify my relationship with the lovely layers?
My efforts to #MaximizeMyCloset gave me a different perspective on the art of layering. It made me understand that learning this art can result in many combinations of a few wardrobe basics. Also, it's not just about the outwear but more about creativity. It does take a bit of imagination to get there, but it can have some great results. Here's what I learned:
Think Of Utility But Don't Forget Your Style
Outerwear is pragmatic, of course. However, why stop just there? Select your outerwear according to your style and comfort, something that fits your persona. Maybe your style calls for a bomber jacket rather than a cape. So, chose accordingly.
Add A Layer For Shape
Sometimes you need a layer to add shape and show off your silhouette. Maybe it's a belted kimono jacket to enhance the waistline or a shoulder-padded blazer for those bold moves. Layers can help you define the shape of your outfit.
Think Beyond Coats & Jackets
The art of layering doesn't always call for outerwear. You can style a dress over a t-shirt or a bralette over a shirt (like I did above). All you need is to think out of the box. Refer to editorial styling or fashion stylists for more such cool combos.
Add Layers For An Illusion
The previous point brings me to this final one. Layering can also give an illusion of separates. The way I used it in my IGTV video above can give you some hints. I layered a sweater over the dress to make it look like a skirt, and I also layered the dress underneath a pair of baggy pants to make it look like a top.
So, now I have become a big believer in fashion layers, as you can see. I hope these few tips help you try out your version of layering. Let me know how it goes!
Love,
