It's an existential question that can be tricky for a few people and easy for some. Here are two methods to help you figure it out if you're still searching for the answer!
How will you describe your style? It's a simple question, and you would expect a one-word answer. For those who can answer this one easily, that's amazing! But for those who (like me) are still narrowing down their style, this question might be challenging.
I came across two phenomenal women who have their established way of narrowing down style quotient through words. Both techniques will help you know how well to describe your style. But most importantly, how these words can help you shop better in the future for your true self.
Orly Shani, aka The DIY Designer, has developed a technique called Style Language™️. Orly describes this technique as a cheat sheet to unlock your personal style. It helps to uncover the symbolic meaning of the aesthetics you gravitate to naturally. The process allows you to dig in and understand who you are as a person. It then uses the information to discover a Style Language™️ unique to you. You list down your energy crushes, style crushes, and words associated with their aesthetics. Then repeated words are combined to narrow down to 3 to 4 keywords that describe your aesthetics.
Allison Bornstein is a stylist and wardrobe consultant who conceptualized the Three Word Method™️. It's a technique that chooses three adjectives to describe your current style and the style you aspire to have. This method takes a deep dive into your closet and also your dream style. The first two words will describe your wardrobe regulars, where you think about what are the common adjectives to describe the clothes you pick regularly. The third word comes from the style you aspire to achieve.
These are two completely different techniques, but the intention is the same. These armor of words become a checklist to see whether an outfit is truly you. They both help you get closer to your future style destination. Now, there's only one other question left. Are you in for the style ride?
Love,
Rashmi B.
