Figuring Out Personal Style For My Thirties

Writer's picture: Rashmi B.Rashmi B.

Will I have the same aesthetics as I did in my twenties, or will it be a complete one-eighty?

Entering my thirties has been such a journey. Last year, I was just tightly holding on to my twenties and very much afraid of the transition the big three-O was to bring. I just wasn't ready to let go of the exuberance of the twenties. Do you feel me? But it's now safe to say I am kinda enjoying this decade too. It took some effort, but we are here to slay.

Speaking of slaying, the one thing I want to zero down on this decade is my personal style. I have always struggled with it because I love experimenting a little. Although, nothing out of my comfort zone. The mix-n-match of all the things I gravitate towards versus what's considered chic has always been my struggle. I was a bit sad when I realized I had given up enjoying dressing up. It suddenly became about getting ready in just a few mins to go somewhere. Also, signs of ageing like gray hair didn't really help.

I used to love to dress up and put some thought into it. I want to go back to that feeling and want to play dress-up again. My Insta pictures might fool you, but aren't they everyone's best pics out there? What I want to focus on is my daily personal style. That's where the struggle is real. Now that I have to adult *rolls her eyes*, I want outfits that showcase who I am, even on a grocery run.

My current hurdle is my closet. I have slowly realized that the clothes are evidently from my twenties. As in, they don't serve my mindset anymore. The above picture is a good example. Those pants have been with me for many years, and their colorful stripes and calf length suited my experimental twenties. Now, both these design elements don't work for me. And it has nothing to do with current trends, mind you.

However, I don't believe in a complete overhaul. #MaximizeMyCloset is still my mantra. Although some clothes will be donated (like the above pair of pants), not all my clothes are getting tossed. I am bringing them into my thirties as gracefully as I can.

So, what's my plan of action?

  • First, to read through and re-understand style basics for my current need.

  • Follow people of social media who inspire me.

  • Make a mood board or maybe a Pinterest board for inspiration.

  • Come up with adjectives to define my style (more on that later).

  • Add basics to my wardrobe through thrifting, swap shops, or buying (only if necessary and if it's of long-lasting quality).

  • Invest in classic accessories.

  • And, finally, to implement my vision by actually coming up with outfits that I love, AKA dressing up.

A small win in this direction was the outfit I came up with when I styled my husband's linen shirt. The ease of the whole thing spoke to me. So, comfort or ease is definitely going to be one of the words to define my style.

I will try to take you along with me on this journey through my blog and other platforms. Will I have the same aesthetics as I did in my twenties, or will it be a complete one-eighty? Let's find out. Follow along!

Love,

Rashmi B.
