You know it's an epic fashion moment when your girlies who are not into fashion like you also text you about it. Coperni Spring/Summer 2023 show's viral moment will surely go down in history and be referenced alongside a similar big moment from Lee Alexander McQueen's 1999 Spring show when the robots spray-painted on the dress worn by Shalom Harlow.
Bella Hadid took center stage in nude underwear, and the process of creating the dress was done by using an innovative spraying technique. The liquid spray turned into the fabric just a few minutes after touching Bella's body. The fabric was then cut and manipulated on her to give its final look. The whole process was mesmerizing!
It was shocking to know that the technique is not new but has been around for almost two decades. Scientist Manel Torres, the founder of the company Fabrican Limited, invented this technique in 2003. Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, co-founders of Coperni, showcasing the potential of Fabrican for their Spring/Summer 2023 just made sense. Fabrican is created by cross-linking of fibers sprayed onto any surface. The fibers adhere to form an instant non-woven fabric on contact. Their website also mentions all its possibilities for the future.
It will allow the wearer to personalize their wardrobe in infinite combinations and liberate designers to create new and unique garments. Fabrican also acts as a carrier technology, delivering fragrance or even active substances for medical applications.
The genius of Fabrican doesn't just stop there. It may be one of the green approaches for the future of fashion too. The ethical and environmental tab on their website mentions this:
Fabrican primarily uses fibers recycled from discarded clothes and other fabrics. The technology can also utilize biodegradable fibers and binders in place of fossil-based polymers to reduce the carbon footprint of material and manufacturing. Once used, Fabrican materials can be redissolved and reused or disposed of for biological degradation into simple molecules under industrial composting conditions.
So, yes, it's a glimpse into the future of the fashion industry but also healthcare. How amazing would it be when this technology becomes easily accessible? Would we have to enter a room and decide the design we want to be sprayed in that day? Like the Jetsons! We might even be able to design our clothes. The possibilities are endless.
Love,
Rashmi B.
