When was the last time you went just for accessories shopping? Whenever we think about shopping or investing in our wardrobe, it always has to do with the clothes. It's only when we start to visualize an outfit that we think about the accessories to go along with it. However, it's such a crucial element of an OOTD, and that's why it's surprising that not enough thought goes into buying the accessories.
Accessorizing is an art and a very personal thing to do. I believe it defines your style. So, why not pay attention to it more often? There's rightfully a whole section dedicated to it in any fashion book that I have read. So, where do we start when it comes to accessorizing? Begin with basics, and slowly introduce your personality in your closet through them.
Shoes
They say that subconsciously the first thing we notice about someone is their shoes. When it comes to shoes, have neutral shades and reliable shapes in your arsenal at any given point in time. White sneakers, neutral heels, and comfortable flats can be a good base. These will guarantee some variety. Just make sure the shoes go with the vibe of the overall outfit. My two cents on this is that these are the shoes you'll reach out to the most, so invest in a good quality product, especially if you're going to wear them almost every day.
Jewelry
Some kind of jewelry like hoops, pearl studs, and chain necklaces are timeless. A piece of jewelry that's passed down as a family heirloom is the best example because it truly has been through different eras. Make sure you have a mixture of shapes and sizes of these classics.
Bags
Another place where you don't want to compromise on quality is your go-to bag. Admit it; it holds all your essentials, it's the most used thing in your closet, and it goes with you everywhere. You might switch out your other accessories from time to time, but you won't easily change your bags. So, be it your daily sling bag, laptop tote, or baggy handbag, good quality in neutral shades is always a winner.
Belt
I had this notion that belts are just functional and no fun. Letting go of this idea has truly liberated me. It's always a good idea to cinch that waist, so why not do it in style?
Sunglasses
A pair of sunglasses is always the one thing that's forgotten when we think of an outfit. No one considers them much of an accessory, but they do make or break a look at times. A classic style and color can look good on many outfits. I am usually drawn to deep brown and tortoiseshell color in a rectangular or cat-eye shape. Make sure you pick a frame that complements your face shape.
Hair Accessories
The one element that many times boils down to just being a scrunchie. However, the joy of adding a hairband or fancy clips to a look will ensure you have a good hair day even when you're not feeling it.
Something To Make A Statement
Finally, I want to say that you don't have to play safely while choosing these accessories. Opt for something that catches the eye and becomes a conversation starter. It's these subtle details that most of us are drawn towards at times. Show off your personality through them. I always go for a pair of statement earrings.
I want to conclude the blog with this enlightening and apt quote by style icon Iris Apfel.
My mother knew if you bought a couple of really good architectural outfits and put your money into accessories, you could create a million different looks. She taught that to me, which I think was invaluable.
Love,
